Week 10 - Forced Connection Pt 2 // Friday, 2 October 2015

WEEK 10 - Forced Connection Pt 2

We went further in depth for our forced connection this week, where we were told to invent new products using whatever we had in our bag by using the forced connection concept,

Provided by the Teacher is another method S.C.A.M.P.E.R, a trigger technique to induce us to think about how we could modify and connect different objects together.

It was very Difficult to come up with new ideas based on the objects we had at hand as a lot of combinations have had been invented and used before. Below is the rough brainstorming that our group did, but did not yield much.

However with a presentation looming, we broke up in pairs to think, where i was paired up with lin ao for one idea and with kelly for another. With Lin Ao, we thought about combining a comb and a hair tie together and added modifications to it - retraction and buttons, naming it the R.C.T, Retractable Comb Tie.

And with kelly, we came up with a combination of mascara and lip gloss stick with a pen as our base, naming it the D.L pen, Dark Light Pen, with Dark for Mascara and light for the glittery lip gloss.

It was also very interesting to learn the different mechanisms, like the retractable pen's, twist pen's and retractable comb and also the simple compass leg extension. the GIFs were made by Kelly.

Especially for the pen mechanisms, its a wonder how i had never taken into consideration how it actually worked till now, taking it as a natural given fact rather than a mechanic. Overall this concept was difficult but interesting as it pushes us to think of new ideas by forcing connections with objects, using different triggers.

WEEK 9 - Forced Connection Pt 1

This week a completely new concept was introduced, called forced connections where it Based on the brain’s ability to link two disparate items, relying on random external triggers that force people to make a connection between the problem at hand and the trigger.

It was interesting as many inventions were made this way, from the very big inventions such a the tent sleeping bag to the smaller ones like a office table with wheels.

One of my favourite forced connection product concept would be furniture, where they would combine different furniture into one. A common one will be a Sofa bed, and a less commonly seen would be a chair into a shelf. They are usually invented to save space or for intrigue.

Overall the concept was a difficult one to grasp at first but interesting and made known that many inventions were made like this, related and improtant to our creative industry where we are always trying to create new things.

In class, we were told to come up with different examples of forced connections with our groups and below is an image of our brainstorming work.

WEEK 8 - Tutorial Week

Our assignment this week was to visit the S.A.M museum or Q8 and select an object and give it 10 emotions. I decided to go to the S.A.M museum and the exhibit that caught my attention was the tank that was created by the artist with the Vietnam war in mind. unfortunately i had forgotten to note down the name, but the picture of the tank can be seen below.

The 10 emotions given to us and the situation that the object might experience such emotions is:

1. Confuse
- when the tank falls into a ditch

2. Happy
- when the tank was made and polished

3.Angry
- when people used flash photography to take pictures of it. (it got blinded by the light)

4. Sad
- When it had to part with its creator and be transported away.

5. Fear
- when it was being transported in a dark enclosed space

6. Proud
- when it hear people complimenting him and his creator

7. Depress
- When the museum close and it gets lonely

8. Anxiety
- When it is being carried from the transportation to the exhibit area

9. Shock
- when it realizes what a grand space it occupies

10. Calm
- when it had been there for ages and have become used to the museum

Week 7 - Analogical Thinking // Friday, 4 September 2015

WEEK 7 - Analogical Thinking

Analogical was a very fresh concept, yet not at the same time. Placing emotions to objects or thinking of how the objects would feel is parallel to using metaphors, similes and personification in my previous school years, but we did not literally had a complete lesson on it, so it was very interesting and different,

Thinking of how the chair might feel when suspended, i personally think that maybe it will feel fun and excited, as it is placed in a different position as the norm.

For a chair being sat on, i would think that it would feel useful and happy, even if it is sat by a overly heavy person. in that case maybe even pride for being able to support others even in a difficult scenario.

For objects in relation to others,i would like to compare:

1. a feather and a pen

Another exercise that we did was associating 3 objects to emotions. Below are my drawings featuring the three objects and different scenes where it would experience the emotions.

Week 6 - Lateral Thinking // Friday, 28 August 2015

WEEK 6 - Lateral Thinking

Lateral thinking was an interesting topic as we needed to think out of the box. several questions were asked in class and they were all familiar ones that i had been exposed to before, probably in primary school, but didn't really pay much attention to then. However, now as i am striving to establish myself in the creative industry, i feel that it is important to remember to think out of the box or unconventional ways.

One of the problems was connecting nine dots with four lines. and there are apparently a lot of different ways to do it, besides the solution discussed in class as seen above. Also, I had seen this problem featured on a korean drama, Sankyukwan Scandal, before where the student rebuffed the teacher and instead of 4 used three lines to connect the dots instead - going the extra mile,

An activity we needed to do for this class was thinking of reasons to the question "why would a bee fly through the window to a painting at the opposite end of the room when there is a vase of fresh rose in front of the window." Below are my ideas, 10 conventional and 10 unconventional.
